The quote I put on the inside of the box is something that just stuck with me that entire time - A ship in the harbor is safe, but that's not what ships are built for.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eMy first 'real' job when I moved to LA was a glorified assistant to this owner I later realized was basically taking advantage of realtors who didn't know how google worked. He'd tell them he'd help them be discovered on google so that when you googled your name, you'd show up (through an ad). Realtors thought this was great but didn't take time to think about the fact that if someone was googling them, they probably already knew about them to begin with. Needless to say, that company went under soon after I (and nearly everyone else) was let go.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eNow that wouldn't be too big of a deal, except for the fact that I had only been here for a few months. I was living in a studio apartment with a friend from high school, my dog Kirby, ants, cockroaches and mice. Believe it or not, none of us had any savings. The pin stripe suit I had saved up to buy was going to waste and I didn't know what was going to happen next.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eI was in a trough - the lowest part of a wave. I had just flown over the crest, full of excitement in a new city and found my ship heading straight down. To say I was terrified is an understatement - I was about to be homeless.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eIf I'm honest with myself, the hardest part of that time in my life wasn't just that I had lost my job; it's that I wasn't living up to my potential. I wasn't doing something remarkable. Like the quote I referenced earlier, it's easy to stay in the harbor and talk about how strong we are. To imagine how much we could do if we 'really' wanted to.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eThis month's Pearl includes two pins - a crane and a boat.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eIn origami, a single piece of paper is used. What's made with that piece of paper is up to the person putting in the work. A boat takes 9 steps, a crane takes 12. Both can be made from identical pieces of paper yet the crane is the most popular origami art ever created.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eWhy?\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eI like to think it's because we'd prefer to make something remarkable when it comes to art.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eWhen it comes to our lives, however, most of us are only comfortable making boats. We don't go for the cranes because they seems too radical to dream about. We let this feeling that we're not worthy of happiness creep in and keep us frozen from making the changes we know, deep down, would bring us joy. That breaks my heart.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eWhat I want you to remember is that it's only three steps. Three more steps to make a crane instead of a boat. Three more steps to find happiness, to find a purpose. My hope for this Pearl is that it reminds you that you're not as far away as you think. From my perspective, the thing I appreciate just as much as the motivation is the spirit in which he did it - it was his life, and he'd do what he believed was best. All of us, at one point or another, have gone through times in our lives where it feels like the expectations of others are suffocating us. Rather than be happy because you are, they question how well you've thought something out that seems 'too different' to them. In my own life, I'm guilty of this - from time to time I catch myself thinking about my brothers and the decisions they make. Yes, I'm the oldest (and obviously the wisest) bro, but rather than put them down for thinking different, I try to encourage it. I let them paint their own canvas. If I'm honest - sometimes giving them that leeway to figure things out for themselves is incredibly difficult. Experience makes it easy for us to feel like someone simply 'isn't listening' to us when we've already been through a similar situation. On the flip side - I've discovered something even more valuable - sometimes I'm wrong. Sometimes they surprise me and show me a different way of looking at something that I hadn't noticed before. That, in itself, is an incredible reward. My hope for you in this month's Pearl is that this little hug will help you reflect on what you want your life to be. Don't be discouraged by the opinions of others and don't take it personally if they don't understand. What do you remember about the year 2000? Leading up to the new year, there was a big scare being pushed on the news that a bug in computer software would cause everything to turn off. Y2K, as it was called, had the potential to make planes fall from the sky and entire power grids to go offline - all our worst fears realized. My dad bought into it - at least I think he wanted us to believe it so he could tease us as the countdown to 2000 began. Sitting in our living room, Brandon, Jordan, Amanda and I waited with bated breath as the clock ticked down. 10. 9. 8... To this day, that was still the longest 10 seconds of my life. Then it happened. The clock struck 12... And nothing turned off. We opened the door and looked around the neighborhood - other people had lights on too - no fires had started, cars had crashed or planes had fallen. Was this entire scare for nothing? Why had we been so worried this entire time? Now think about the time from that moment, when we entered the year 2000, til right now. 20 years later. A lot has changed, hasn't it? As I reflected on my own life for the last Pearl of this decade, I thought about all the things that have happened - many of which are the defining moments of my life: Marriage, kids, and ZOX. The more I thought about it though, the more I realized that before I experienced all of those defining moments, I went through many of the worst in my life. I lost my grandpa, my uncle and just about every last dollar I had to my name. I was $500 away from being homeless. This Pearl was the best way I could think of to share what that journey looks like. It's crossing the rope bridge. The first step is the hardest - It's swaying back and forth, creaking as the fibers tighten under every step. We're holding on for dear life, praying that crossing was the right decision. As we near the center, the danger seems magnified as we realize how vulnerable we really are. We look back at where we started and wonder if maybe it'd be better to just turn around. And then it hits you. Someone was here, well before you. They risked everything to build the bridge so that they could cross. They left it there so that you could too. Your fear seems to disappear with the understanding that someone else was brave enough to cross. You gain confidence as you realize that they too left their past behind them. I believe we all yearn for a bridge-builder in our lives - a guide to inspire and uplift us as we struggle with the issues in our past. Someone who can share in the highs and lows of what we're going through, responding with love and empathy as they help us through. That, to me, is most evident in our community. Thousands of incredibly kind, loving people are here; each of us with our own bridges we've crossed, our own experiences to share. My hope for you with this month's Pearl, the final one of the decade, is that it'll remind you of someone in your life who's helped you get where you need to be. Before we had Sven, Kara and I used to go on dates all the time - Saturday afternoon drives were our favorite. We'd go explore the canyons in Malibu, constantly trying to find new roads wherever we could. When Sven was born, we tried our best to continue with dates, but our time together slowly dwindled. Mars, my second child, even more so. Luna, my baby girl - my goodness, dates with Kara are basically impossible now. But we still manage to find time to carve out little moments together. Whether it's watching a movie after the kids are in bed or getting a babysitter so we can go on a hike, these moments have grown to define our relationship - because they're all we have. No matter where I am, I wanted to figure out a way to take a reminder of these moments with me. When I was coming up with the idea for this design, I kept going back to this line in the movie Heat: \"For me, the sun rises and sets with her.\" What a beautiful portrayal of love - this idea that our days (and our lives) start and end with the people we care most about. Kara is my sun - she's what has kept me going through all the ups and downs, always there to uplift and encourage. She's given me the best gifts I could ever ask for - 3 incredible children that make my heart feel like it's going to burst every time I see them. What I love about this is that your sun doesn't need to be a significant other. Maybe it's a friend who's been there through it all, a child you've raised on your own or a parent you'd like to show appreciation for. If that's the case - gift the pin to them and tell them what they mean to you. If that person is no longer here, wear the pin this month as a symbol of love and adoration for the time you had together.
